The Transformation of the Miami Beach Convention Center
(2015 – Today)
To maintain its reputation as a world-class event destination, MBCC underwent a $640 million transformation between 2015 and 2020, introducing state-of-the-art technology, modern architecture, and sustainability-focused enhancements.
This comprehensive renovation delivered 1.4 million square feet of flexible event space, a new 60,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom, upgraded meeting rooms with high-tech AV capabilities, and an eco-conscious design that achieved LEED Silver Certification. These improvements ensure MBCC continues to set the standard for conventions, trade shows, and cultural events.
Since its reopening in 2018, MBCC has hosted numerous high-profile events, starting with AHIMA in September and the Miami International Auto Show in October.
A Legacy of Iconic Moments
(1958 – 2014)
Before its reimagination, MBCC was already known for hosting historic moments, cultural milestones, and world-renowned events. In 2002, MBCC became home to Art Basel Miami Beach, cementing its reputation as a hub for global arts and culture.
Politically, MBCC played a significant role in U.S. history, hosting the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in 1972, marking the last time both conventions were held in the same city. The venue also welcomed the Republican National Convention in 1968, solidifying its place as a key stage for national discourse.
In sports history, MBCC was the site of Muhammad Ali’s first heavyweight championship victory in 1964, where he defeated Sonny Liston in Hall C. The venue also saw continuous expansion, with major renovations in 1974 ($15.7 million) and 1988-89 ($54 million), ensuring it could accommodate the growing demand for large-scale events. The Miami International Auto Show first debuted at MBCC in 1971, becoming a signature event for the city.
Key Enhancements from the Renovation & Expansion:
- Increased total venue size from 1.2 million sq. ft. to 1.4 million sq. ft.
- 500,000 sq. ft. of contiguous exhibit space across four halls.
- Grand Ballroom (60,000 sq. ft.) – the largest ballroom in South Florida.
- Sunset Vista Ballroom (20,000 sq. ft.) with skyline views and an outdoor terrace.
- Three additional junior ballrooms ranging from 12,000-16,000 sq. ft.
- Up to 84 meeting rooms with flexible configurations.
- 9 acres of outdoor event space, including Pride Park & Collins Canal Park.
- 800 rooftop parking spaces for convenience.
- LEED Silver Certification, recognizing MBCC’s sustainability efforts.
- $7.1 million investment in public art, curated by Miami Beach’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) Program.
Completed Facility Upgrades
Roofing & Infrastructure Maintenance

VIP Cleaning Window Company Training
MBCC employees trained with VIP Cleaning Window Company, a veteran-owned business, to master advanced window cleaning techniques. This training helps preserve the clarity of floor-to-ceiling glass panels and maintain MBCC’s iconic ocean wave design.
Advanced Floor Care & Maintenance Training
Staff received specialized training in cement polishing and terrazzo floor care to improve long-term maintenance. This ensures MBCC’s floors remain polished and professional for all events.
